Descripción : Euthanasia in piglets is necessary on farms. Although the Blunt Force Trauma method is effective when it is well performed, it can be psychologically difficult for the person who is performing it. Methods of euthanasia are using carbon dioxide, which is effective but aversive for the piglets. Another method using a mixtures of nitrous oxide could be a good alternative, regarding its anaesthetic effects and less aversiveness. However, if there is a technical issue and the procedure fails, it is unknown whether the piglets would remember the gas chamber if the method is used again. If they do remember, they would experience stress during the second exposure, this would threaten piglets´ welfare. This project seeks to assess the memory in piglets under three different gas treatments, to determine the least aversive method for euthanasia in piglets.
